A message from the Head of Primary School
Dear Parents and Carers
Today Year 2 parents had the opportunity to come and sit in during an ‘open rehearsal’ for our Year 2 string players. These students have only taken up their instrument this year and I know from personal experience it is a unique journey for students, that is hugely beneficial and immensely character building.
At the beginning of the year, I am sure there were parents at home quietly whispering, ‘we have 12 months of this!’ but through their support of the children, our Year 2's are starting to shine. The valuable learnings from the music curriculum aside, students are also learning an array of skills that will help them outside the classroom too.
Persistence as they strive to master their new songs and rehearsal routines, organisational skills as they prepare for each part of the lesson from having their instrument ready to being on the correct page of the song book, team building skills as they coordinate their own playing with that of their classmates who may even be on different instruments. Finally, confidence as they stand up and perform in their ensemble – something that takes courage and a willingness to overcome nerves.
I strongly encourage parents to assist their children to stick with their instruments as long as they can. The progression may not be as instant as students would like but the long term benefits and sense of pride and accomplishment they have when they can confidently perform more complicated pieces are immense. Of course it is a whole lot of fun too!
Thank you for supporting our music program across the Primary School.
Kind regards
Mark Douglas
