Frequently Asked Questions
In 2024, St Mark’s undertook a comprehensive redesign of its enrolments procedures, aimed at optimising internal processes and enhancing the experience for prospective families. This update, launched in November 2024, included the introduction of a digital enrolments platform alongside a revised enrolment process and associated terminology.
If you have any questions not addressed in our Frequently Asked Questions, please contact us at enrol@stmarks.wa.edu.au
Key Terminology Updates
The following table outlines the changes in terminology associated with the enrolment process:
What are the key intake years at St Mark’s?
St Mark’s has key intake years at Kindergarten (50 Places), Year 1(8 Places), Year 2 (29 Places), Year 3 (9 Places), Year 4 (32 Places) and Year 6 (64 Places).
Entry to the School through other year groups is possible, however, places in all non-key-entry years are dependant on current students withdrawing from the cohort.
Does St Mark’s have a Year 7 intake?
No, St Mark’s has a Middle School model and an intake at Year 6 instead of Year 7. Year 6 students at St Mark’s enjoy an intentionally designed transition program in Year 6 which prepares them for life in Senior School.
What happens if I do not want to enrol my child in Year 6 and only want them to move across to St Mark’s in Year 7?
St Mark’s does not have an entry point at Year 7 and it is highly unlikely that students applying for enrolment in Year 7 will gain a place. Places in Year 7 and above only become available when a student from a particular cohort withdraws, which is not a regular or normal occurrence.
How do I apply for a place at St Mark’s?
The first step in the application process is to submit an Expression of Interest and join our Waiting Pool. All families in the Waiting Pool will be invited to apply for enrolment when the enrolments process for their desired year of entry commences.
When should I apply for enrolment?
All families in the Waiting Pool will be invited to apply for a place in their desired year of entry when the enrolment process for that intake year commences.
How does the Application Process work?
The St Mark’s Enrolment Process is as follows:
- Enquiry
- Expression of Interest
- Waiting Pool
- Application for Enrolment
- Interview
- Onboarding and Orientation (Successful applicants)
- Waiting Pool (Unsuccessful applicants and families who decline an offer).

Do I need to submit a new application for my child if I have applied previously and my details have been transferred from the Waiting List to the new Waiting Pool?
Yes, all families in the Waiting Pool will be invited to apply and submit a new application for their desired year of entry.
Why will I be required to submit a new application, if I have previously applied?
New applications are required for each desired intake year to ensure that St Mark’s is working with the most up to date information and reports as well as an active list of applicants.
What happens if my application is not successful?
All applicants who are not successful will have the choice of having their details moved back to the Waiting Pool for the next available entry point. Alternatively, families can request to withdraw their details from the Waiting Pool.
What happens if I am offered a place at St Mark’s but chose to decline the offer? Can I defer my offer to another year?
Families that decline the offer for a place cannot defer their entry to another entry year. Declining an offer will result in your details being transferred back to our Waiting Pool and you will be required to submit a new application for your desired year of entry.
How are applications at St Mark’s assessed?
Our School develops a year cohort of students who reflect the balance of the broader community across a range of factors and appropriate to the resources available. Where a continuing year group is being expanded with an additional intake of students, the overall balance of the larger group is considered. By fostering a balanced and diverse student body, we aim to cultivate a vibrant, respectful, and inclusive school culture that prepares all students for success in an interconnected world.
A number of factors are considered by the School when considering a place within a year group. The factors include, but are not limited to, those listed below:
- Siblings of currently enrolled students - currently enrolled students refer to any students who are currently attending St Mark's or have paid their acceptance deposit and are awaiting commencement at the School. Sibling applications make up a significant proportion of applications received.
- Children of Anglican Clergy holding a license in the Perth Diocese.
- Children of practising members of the Anglican Church
- Children of participating members of the St Mark's Old Scholars' Association or St Mark's staff
- Individual family circumstances / Principal’s discretion
- Gender and cultural diversity - we strive to build inclusive and respectful cohorts that reflect the broader community, with a focus on gender balance and cultural diversity.
- Academic readiness and school reports - we consider past academic progress, learning behaviours, and school reports to help us understand how best we can support each child’s growth.
- Availability of places - interviews are offered subject to the number of places available in key intake years and the School’s capacity to support each student. In intake years, there are often more applications for places than there are available places.
The date of Expression of Interest does not influence the selection process and only applications received within the Application window are considered when applications are being assessed.
Applications are considered by a committee comprising the Principal or delegate, Heads of Sub-School and Head of Advancement, that aims to achieve a balanced and inclusive cohort. Upon consideration of all applications, the committee views the cohort as a whole (current and prospective) and aims to balance gender, cultural diversity and character. Following an application, an interview is not guaranteed, and the outcome of any interview is also a factor considered by the School as part of the process. An invitation to an interview at St Mark’s does not guarantee a place at the School.
What does the formal interview entail?
The formal interview is a sit down meeting between the family (applicant and parents/guardians/carers) and Head/Deputy Head of Sub-School or Head of Year.
This is an opportunity for each party to get to know each other and decide whether the School is a good fit for the student.
How do you interpret ‘active Members of the Old Scholars’ Association’?
Active Members of the Old Scholars’ Association (OSA) are Old Scholars who are active within the School community and/or the OSA Committee. This would include attending at least two committee meetings or OSA organised activities within the last 12 months.
For more information or to get involved, please contact the Old Scholars' Association on osa@stmarks.wa.edu.au
Does having a Life Member number mean that I am an active member of the Old Scholars’ Association?
No, only old Scholars who participate within the Old Scholars' Association are active members.
Can I attend a School Tour without submitting an Expression of Interest?
No, only families in the Waiting Pool will be invited to attend a School Tour.
Does every student that applies to St Mark’s gain entry to the School?
No, places at St Mark’s are highly sought after and not all families who apply will gain a place at the School.
Once in the Waiting Pool, how often can I expect to hear from St Mark’s?
St Mark’s will communicate with families in the Waiting Pool at least once per term. Families can expect to receive updates from the School in the form of newsletters, invitations to public events and an annual request to update your details and intention to remain in the Waiting Pool.
Why has St Mark’s changed its enrolment process?
St Mark’s has updated its enrolment process to create a streamlined internal process and improve the experience for prospective parents.
