Writing and Content Roles

• Copywriter / Content Writer: Create marketing material, web pages, or advertisements for businesses and agencies.
• Technical Writer: Write clear instruction manuals, user guides, or system documentation for complex tech and government projects.
• Journalist / Reporter: Research, interview sources, and write news stories for digital or print media.

Publishing and Editing

• Copyeditor / Proofreader: Review books, articles, or corporate documents to fix grammar and improve style.

Communications and Corporate Affairs

• Public Relations (PR) Consultant: Manage media relations and shape public image for companies or non-profits.

• Internal Communications Coordinator: Draft newsletters, memos, and policy updates for large workforces.

Education and Information Services

• Secondary School Teacher: Complete a Master of Teaching to teach high school English.

The 2026 Insight Creative Writing Competition is open to high school students around Australia. It aims to ignite a passion for creative writing and inspire the voices of the future.

The University of Western Australia (UWA): Offers an English and Literary Studies major through its Bachelor of Arts or BPhil (Hons), focusing on literature, film, creative writing, and critical theory.

Curtin University: Features an English and Cultural Studies Specialisation which channels students directly into copywriting, journalism, and public relations paths. They also host a Master of Arts postgraduate program.

Murdoch University: Features a blended English and Creative Writing major designed to build active portfolios in editing, workshopping, and narrative design.

University of Notre Dame Australia: Offers a specific Bachelor of Arts with a Major in Literature and Writing at its Fremantle campus, prioritizing critical evaluation and historical text analysis.

ECU: English is offered as a comprehensive major or specialisation within broader degrees like the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Education. English Major

If you are one of the top students at you school and you want to go to Curtin in 2027, ask you principal to nominate you for the Curtin Scholarship Program,

High school principals are invited to nominate students in the top 5% of the school’s graduating year who can demonstrate academic excellence, leadership qualities and engagement in community service.

The nomination form and the reference letter are to be completed and endorsed by the high school principal. These documents need to be attached with the student’s application and submitted online by the student.

Students who receive an ATAR of 96+ and place an eligible Curtin course as their first preference through TISC by 20 December 2026 will automatically be considered for the Curtin Excellence Scholarship.

You need to the 18 on 20 January 2027, undertaking fulltime studies at a public tertiary institution (including TAFE or university) and identify as a member of the LGBTQIA+ commuinity.

We provide educational scholarships, mentoring and opportunities for young LGBTQIA+ Australians to realise their full potential. Scholarships are awarded for fulltime study at public institutions of higher education in Australia, for the purpose of gaining an educational or vocational qualification in any profession, trade or the arts.

Life after school can be full of exciting opportunities. It can also be challenging to decide what you want to do. This School Leavers Information Kit (SLIK) has been created by the National Careers Institute (NCI) to help you prepare for your next steps after school.
