Year 12 Walpole Expedition 2024

The Year 12 Outdoor Education General Kayaking Expedition to Walpole ran from Tuesday, 30 April to Friday, 3 May 2024. It provided students with a valuable opportunity to develop their outdoor skills, teamwork, leadership and environmental awareness.

The expedition was meticulously planned, with each student completing an expedition planner focusing on safety, skill-building, packing, menu planning and environmental sustainability. Before the trip, students underwent training sessions to familiarise themselves with kayaking techniques, safety protocols, and navigation skills. Students conducted thorough risk assessments to identify potential hazards and mitigate risks during the expedition.

Students navigated through the picturesque Walpole and Nornalup Inlets, Deep and Frankland Rivers, encountering varying landscapes and challenges along the way. The student-led expedition showcased their environmental awareness and sustainability practices. Throughout the journey, students actively engaged in camp craft, demonstrating leadership, interpersonal skills, and a commitment to sustainable outdoor practices. The students successfully followed their designated routes and navigational objectives daily through effective teamwork and decision-making.

The expedition presented numerous challenges, including sudden changes in weather conditions and navigating unfamiliar waterways and obstacles. However, students demonstrated resilience and adaptability, overcoming these challenges through effective communication, problem-solving, and collaboration. Their ability to navigate the expedition showcased their skills and determination to succeed in challenging outdoor environments.

The expedition has fostered strong bonds and a sense of camaraderie among the Year 12 students, and through activities undertaken, students gained a deeper appreciation for nature.

The Year 12 Outdoor Education General Kayaking Expedition was a resounding success. The lessons learned from this expedition will continue to inspire and empower students to embrace new challenges, cultivate strong bonds, and champion environmental stewardship in their future endeavours.
