R U OK? Day: A Conversation That Matters Every Day
R U OK? Day provided an opportunity for our St Mark’s community to pause, connect and remind one another of the importance of checking in on the people around us.
The day began with a morning drive-through where parents and caregivers were greeted with a special KitKat treat, before the focus shifted to the wider community. Each year, St Mark’s partners with Westfield Whitford City to spread the R U OK? Day message beyond our School gates. This year, students and staff handed out flowers and shared conversations with shoppers, encouraging people to take the time to genuinely ask, “Are you OK?” We extend our sincere thanks to The Flower Society for generously providing the beautiful gerberas that helped brighten so many people's days.
Back at School, cupcakes, conversations and simple acts of kindness encouraged students and staff to check in with one another and reflect on the difference a caring conversation can make.
While R U OK? Day shines a spotlight on mental wellbeing, the message is one that extends far beyond a single day. Checking in with friends, family members, colleagues and neighbours should be something we make part of our everyday lives.
If someone doesn’t seem quite themselves, take a moment to reach out. Give them a call instead of sending a text. Catch up with someone you haven’t spoken to in a while. Smile at a stranger. Offer a high-five. Ask the question and be prepared to listen.
You never know what someone else may be going through, and a simple act of kindness or conversation could make a world of difference.
Because sometimes, a conversation can change a life.
