Exploring Passions and Pathways
Now officially a semester into St Mark's refreshed electives curriculum, students in Years 9 and 10 are embracing the opportunity to explore new interests, discover hidden talents and gain valuable insights into future career pathways.
The middle years of schooling are often a time of significant growth and change. In particular, Year 9 can be a challenging year for many students – a year caught between settling into senior school and beginning to make decisions about future pathways. It is a time when students are asking important questions about who they are, what they enjoy and where their strengths lie.
Our new electives programme has been designed to help answer those questions.
By providing a diverse range of semester-based electives, students have the opportunity to step beyond traditional classroom learning and immerse themselves in subjects that connect directly to their interests, emerging industries and future careers. Rather than asking students to choose a pathway without context, we are giving them the opportunity to explore, experiment and discover.
The response has been overwhelmingly positive.
Across both Year 9 and Year 10, students are engaging in industry-connected learning experiences that bring learning to life. In The AI Project, students are creating AI agents while exploring emerging technologies and future-focused innovation. Project Runway combines sustainable fashion with design thinking, challenging students to consider how creativity and environmental responsibility can work hand in hand. Meanwhile, students in Places and Spaces have been designing innovative learning environments under the mentorship of architects and town planners, with the opportunity to present their work at the Learning Environments Australasia Conference.
Other electives are allowing students to explore highly specialised industries and practical skills. In Dimensional Design: Jewellery, students are learning professional jewellery-making techniques while developing creativity, precision and design-thinking skills. Meanwhile, Glow Up – Beauty Lab takes students behind the scenes of the beauty industry, where they investigate the science of skincare and cosmetics, explore sustainable product development and create their own environmentally conscious beauty products. These experiences challenge students to think critically about the products they use every day while gaining hands-on scientific and design skills.
One of the newest additions to the programme, Year 10 Nursing and Medical Preparation, has quickly become a student favourite.
Students have been immersed hands-on into the world of healthcare. Students have used virtual reality technology to interact with patients and monitor vital signs, practised taking blood pressure and pulse readings in a nursing simulation ward, and learned life-saving CPR techniques. They have also explored ECU's midwifery facilities, taking part in newborn care activities and experiencing empathy suits designed to simulate the later stages of pregnancy.
These experiences demonstrate exactly what the new electives programme aims to achieve — connecting classroom learning with real-world experiences and helping students explore potential future careers in meaningful ways.
The breadth of opportunities available means students can discover passions they may never have previously considered. Whether exploring entrepreneurship, psychology, digital technologies, media production, design, hospitality, engineering, health sciences or the creative arts, students are developing skills that extend well beyond the classroom.
Importantly, these electives are helping students develop confidence and ownership of their learning. Teachers have reported strong engagement levels, increased curiosity and a willingness among students to challenge themselves in new ways. Students are making connections between what they are learning today and the opportunities that may await them tomorrow.
As students move into Year 10 and begin considering senior school pathways, these experiences become even more valuable. The electives programme provides a bridge between core learning and future aspirations, allowing students to make informed decisions based on genuine experiences rather than assumptions.
At St Mark's, our commitment is to provide an education that is both challenging and enriching. The success of our new electives programme demonstrates the value of giving students choice, voice and opportunities to explore the world around them.
Only one semester in and our students are already thriving. New passions are emerging, confidence is growing, and future pathways are beginning to take shape. We look forward to seeing where their curiosity, creativity and ambition will take them next.
